Northampton registrar awarded national prize for groundbreaking research

Description
An ophthalmology registrar at Northampton General Hospital, Dr Sohaib Rufai, is the 25th recipient of the prestigious Vernon Prize Trophy, for ground-breaking research into the study of nystagmus or 'dancing eyes' in young children and infants.

NGH staff pay tribute to NHS founder, groundbreaking black footballer and town's first matron with new ward names

Description
The founder of the National Health Service, the second black professional football player in British history and first nursing matron to serve Northampton will give their names to Northampton General Hospital's new emergency assessment building and wards. The new building will be called The Nye Bevan Building in honour of the architect of the NHS who 70 years ago established the British system of a health service funded from general taxation and free at the point of use.

Northampton cancer waiting times meet and exceed national targets

Description
All nine cancer targets were met by Northampton General Hospital during December 2017, ensuring that all patients were seen and treated within the national waiting time standards. Nearly 100 per cent of new cancer patients cared for by the hospital received treatment for their disease within 31 days of being told they need medical or surgical intervention.

Patient experience projects shortlisted for national awards

Description
Patient feedback schemes that have resulted in new reading lamps on an oncology ward, an increase in patients using sleep packs to help get a good night's sleep, and overnight stays for partners of women in labour have been shortlisted for three prestigious national awards.

60 bed assessment unit update: 2nd planned traffic diversion

Description
Continuing progress is being made on NGH's new 60 bedded assessment unit. Key modules were put in place during December by crane, this phase is now complete. A further road-closure will be required on 22nd January; this will involve some essential diversion of traffic around the site until 12th February to enable cladding and roof coverings to be fitted along with essential work to the bridge that will link the assessment unit to the hospital. In order to complete these tasks, a 3 metre clear working access area will be required for construction workers.

Local hospitals under extreme pressure

Description
Kettering and Northampton General Hospitals are currently under considerable emergency pressure and are urging local people to use NHS services appropriately. A large number of patients requiring emergency care has built up pressure on wards and A&E departments over the Christmas and New Year period - which means both hospitals are concentrating their efforts on emergency care.

Northampton hospital and university develop unique study programme

Description
A unique post-graduate course offering unprecedented access to clinical quality improvement processes and facilities has been launched jointly by Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust and the University of Northampton. The course, an MSc in Quality Improvement & Patient Safety, is the first of its kind in the United Kingdom to be taught within a hospital rather than a university and will incorporate hospital-based study including NGH's acclaimed simulation centre where everyday scenarios can be recreated for training purposes.
