Supervision of Midwives

Supervision of Midwives

som1

Supervisors of Midwives at Northampton General Hospital are experienced midwives who have undertaken additional education and training and are appointed by the Local Supervising Authority.

What we do

The Northampton team of supervisors of midwives support and guide our midwives to provide the highest standards of midwifery care to meet the varied needs of our local population.  We also advise and support women and their families, helping them to understand and make decisions and choices about their maternity care.  They are there to discuss any issues or concerns women or their families have about their care.

Our Philosophy

We believe in the progression and enhancement of the protection of the public through statutory supervision, as an integral part of the Trust's clinical governance process.

Midwives are empowered and encouraged to take responsibility for their practice.  We do this by reviewing the work of each midwife, identifying training opportunities and drawing up an action plan to develop their skills, whilst providing ongoing support.  Our emphasis is on ensuring that midwives are up-to-date with the latest evidence based practice and research.

To ensure our supervision is effective and helps to improve skills and the care our midwives provide, we help and support each other, working together as a team to create an environment in which we can all thrive and achieve our full potential.
