The Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Service in Northamptonshire is part of the National Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme (NAAASP) and commenced in April 2012.
The Northamptonshire AAA programme is screening all men during their 65th year, who are registered with a GP Practice in Northamptonshire and will:
- Identify aneurysms that need monitoring
- Discover aneurysms that could rupture, enabling treatment to be offered
- Reassure men who don't have an aneurysm
Screening clinics are held during the week at GP Practices and community health clinics/ hospitals across Northamptonshire.
Men are invited via a letter to attend an AAA screening clinic in their local area, usually their own GP Practice. All booking and invitations are co-ordinated from the Northamptonshire AAA Screening Office at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust.
The screening consists of a simple, painfree ultrasound scan of the abdomen and the appointment lasts for 10-15 minutes. The aorta is measured and results are given on the day, where this measurement is less than 3cm, the patient is discharged from the screening programme. If an aneurysm is identified and the measurements are between 3.0-5.4cms (small-medium), the patient is offered regular surveillance scans either annually or 3-monthly and advice from a Vascular Nurse Specialist.
The team works closely with the Northamptonshire Vascular Service and refers on any man found to have a large aneurysm (>5.5cms).
For more information and/or if you have turned 65, are male and have not previously been screened you can request a scan by contacting the Northamptonshire Screening Office:
