I am really proud to lead the nursing and midwifery teams here at Northampton recognising that we are the first hospital in the UK to be accredited with ‘Pathway to Excellence®’

As the Trusts most senior nurse I provide professional leadership to all the nurses and midwives, I believe that our staff are our greatest asset, I am committed to ensuring that our patients receive the ‘best possible care’ we can offer and our staff feel that this is a hospital where they belong and that they work in an environment where they can develop.

I have worked at Northampton for the past 18 years initially as a Critical Care Sister and then through Senior Nurse roles.

I have had the privilege to lead a fantastic team through several innovative development changes, which in the last 2 years includes leading on our Shared Decision Making Councils, introducing recognition programmes such as DAISY and being part of the senior team in the achievement of ‘Pathway to Excellence®’ designation.  I have the passion to drive the profession forward through innovation and improvement with a deep seated belief in meaningful recognition and staff empowerment for change, resulting in improved patient care.




Helen Lidbetter

(Interim) Associate Director of Nursing - Medicine

I am proud to have been a Nurse for over 30 years and my experience has been in a variety of settings and includes Surgical Nursing, Intensive Care, Resuscitation Officer and Specialist Nursing including setting up a Nurse led Rapid Response service.

I have worked at Northampton General Hospital since 2013 firstly as a Medical Matron overseeing the care delivered within a number of speciality areas. In 2015 I became a Nursing and Quality Matron and have enjoyed seeing care to our patients measurably improve through interprofessional collaborative work and specific Quality Improvement projects. I am particularly proud of jointly leading the development and implementation of the Ward Assessment and Accreditation tool and was able to present a poster on the work at the Pathway to Excellence conference in Texas in May 2017.

As the Associate Director of Nursing within Medicine and Urgent Care I have overall responsibility for quality and safe, effective and compassionate care across the division. We have a huge variety of patient care needs from the acuity in the Emergency Department and specialist respiratory, renal and cardiology wards through to the complexities of the older person.

I am a passionate nurse who has worked at NGH since qualifying as a nurse in 2003.  My background is Trauma and Orthopaedics and I became a Specialist practitioner in 2006. Within my current role as interim Associate Director of Nursing for Surgery I have been given the opportunity to develop and lead the nursing workforce within my division. I lead on innovative nursing practice to ensure patients receive the best possible safe care.  I enjoy maintaining my clinical skills and work clinically within my ward areas when my role allows.

I look forward to my future nursing years and what this may bring.

I am proud to have been a nurse for over 30 years, much of which has been based at Northampton General Hospital.  My experience has been in a variety of settings and includes Surgical Nursing, Gynaecology, Head and Neck, Maternity and setting up a Nurse led one stop Pre-Operative Assessment Service.

I have the privilege to lead a fantastic team and to provide senior nursing leadership within the women’s, children’s, oncology and haematology division ensuring delivery of high care standards care and patient experience. I’m responsible for the strategic direction and overall provision of the management of nursing services. I am a passionate nurse who has been a part of a senior team in the achievement of ‘Pathway to Excellence®’ designation and I want to empower nursing to ensure best possible patient care.

I have been privileged to work in the health service for over 35 years across a diverse range of settings, ranging from mental health, community, commissioning, to acute care. This has enabled me to have a wider perspective about the health economy from an operational to a strategic level. However, I have always ensured that the individual / patient, has always been the focus of my practice.

For the last ten years of my career I have worked as a safeguarding specialist. My current portfolio includes safeguarding across all ages, dementia, mental health, learning disabilities and equality and diversity.  Therefore, I am passionate about supporting patients and their families and ensuring that the workforce understand and “see” the potential risks of abuse or neglect to all members of the families we assess and treat.

Associate Director of Midwifery

I have been a nurse and midwife for over 20 years and have held a diverse range of clinical, operational and senior leadership roles within both midwifery and nursing.

As the Associate Director of Midwifery I am the most senior midwife in the Trust and I am responsible for the whole Midwifery service, in hospital and community settings. My responsibility is to ensure that the Best Possible Maternity Care is delivered at Northampton for every mum, baby and family. Maternity Services have approximately 4800 babies born in a year.

My professional interests include using Experienced Based Co-Design for service development and improvement and transformational change in maternity services.

I am a Florence Nightingale Leadership Scholar and an Iolanthe Midwifery Award winner. I play an active role with MatExp which a social movement for change and transformation in maternity services. Follow me on Twitter: @GallyHJ - I am a top 10 UK social media influencer in Midwifery.

Associate Director of Professional and Practice Development

I have been involved in the learning and development of staff and colleagues since undertaking my Registered Operating Department Practitioner (RODP) training 27 years ago. I have experience in the private sector of education, Higher Education Institutions, a strategic Health Authority and various Trusts across the UK and overseas.

I led the first cohort of female ODP students to successful qualification in the Middle East.  I am a mentor for the Council of Deans ‘150 Student leaders’ programme.  I am privileged to be leading a team of practice development staff that ensure our health care support workers, nursing associates, nurses and midwives are supported through their professional and clinical development journey, to deliver the best possible care to our patients.

Associate Director of Nursing - Pathway to Excellence® Lead 

My career began in the NHS 20 years ago within the Neurophysiology department at Addenbrookes.  In 2004 I began my second degree in midwifery and graduated highest and was awarded the Dean’s prize.  In 2013 I won an ‘innovation in practice’ award grant (£10,000) for a new service I led within maternity complementary therapies, and embarked on my MPhil.  In 2013 I wrote a business plan and successfully acquired the first funding for reproductive health research in that organisation, this became substantial thereafter due to the successful research activity I led, resulting in increased external funding for further staff.

In 2014 I was appointed as an NIHR Midwife Champion for the Eastern region and formed part of a national network.  I also proudly led a regional pilot scheme working with volunteers to establish ‘Patient Research Ambassadors success led to national workshops sharing the model.  In November 2016 I was awarded ‘Emerging Leader’ by Health Education England, and in May 2017 completed the” NIHR Advanced Leadership Programme”. I joined NGH in 2017 leading the application and evidence submission process for Pathway to Excellence®, an international accreditation for nursing excellence, the organisation were successfully designated in 2018.
