Research and Innovation

Every minute in the UK, someone is diagnosed with a new condition or disease. And whether they’re prescribed medication, recommended for surgery or started on a course of physical therapy, their treatment will, at some point, have been informed by health research.

A research nurse taking a patients temperature. This research is ongoing and happening right now, with more life-saving breakthroughs and amazing medical discoveries being made every year.

And the best part? You can help make these breakthroughs happen. We have a dedicated department at Northampton General Hospital who work with our Principal Investigators to undertake research.

We have an academic strategy that sets out how we will:

  • Grow the research taking place at NGH.
  • Develop the numbers of research active members of staff through internal training programmes, supporting Masters and PhDs and creating Clinical Academic posts with our University partners.
  • Support innovation ideas through to commercialisation.

We played an important role in understanding how we can diagnose and treat COVID-19. We are a top 15 recruiter to the RECOVERY trial. We are working with University of Leicester and University Hospitals Leicester in to grow our research.

Industry Partners

We are proud to work with our partners for commercially funded research. We have a track record of delivery for commercial trials and are investing in our team to enable us to expand the numbers of commercial trials we run. As a hospital group,  we recruited over 4,200 patients in 2019/20.

In addition to the full range of district general hospital care, NGH also provides some specialist services including cancer and stroke services for the county. It has inpatient, day case, diagnostic, maternity and outpatient facilities with a dedicated children’s ward and outpatients.

In 2019/20 teams at NGH cared for approximately 135,000 emergency patients and 140,000 patients were referred to us for treatment.
