Cervical Polypectomy (Removal of Cervical Polyp)

Introduction

A cervical polyp is a benign (not cancerous) growth of tissue on the cervix. They are similar to skin tags and are quite common. They are usually harmless and easy to remove. They can vary in size but usually go unnoticed, until you have a smear test.

Some polyps can cause

  • discharge
  • bleeding between periods
  • bleeding after sex
  • Bleeding after the menopause

Cervical polyps can easily be removed in the outpatients department. This is usually painless however some women have felt aches similar to mild period pain.

It is normal to feel tummy ache or mild period pains for the next 24 hours, in which case you can take painkillers to keep you comfortable.

Once the polyp is removed there may be some slight bleeding in which case, the Doctor/Nurse Specialist may apply some Silver Nitrate to the cervix. This will stop the bleeding and encourage the skin to heal. It will give you a grey discharge and some vaginal spotting for the next few days.

While you have this discharge and bleeding, you must:

●   Not use tampons (pads only)

●   Not bath or swim (showers only)

●   Not have sexual intercourse as this may cause infection.

It is best not to take part in any high impact exercise like running, weight lifting etc. as this can cause the vagina to bleed which will take longer to heal. If you wish to workout, it’s best to do low impact exercise such as yoga.

If you find over the next few days you experience:

  • High Temperature
  • Smelly/offensive vaginal discharge
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding (heavier than your regular period)

It may indicate you have an infection in which case you will need to contact your GP to have some antibiotics, however this is unlikely.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Gynae Endoscopy Team.
