Induction of Labour

Induction of Labour (IOL) is usually offered for two reasons.

  1. post-dates:  you will be offered IOL if you go past your due date. This is usually offered 7-12 days past your EDD (estimated due date).
  2. medical conditions or complications, for example: gestational diabetes or concerns with your baby’s growth.

Induction of labour should be agreed following an in-depth discussion with your consultant or Midwife, explaining both the risks and benefits. If you have been recommended IOL, but do not wish to be induced, please discuss this with your midwife or doctor. It may be useful to use the ‘BRAIN’ acronym to support your informed decision making.

At NGH, we offer two methods of induction (hormonal and mechanical), which are explained in our ‘induction of labour leaflet’  (linked below but also available via your badgerNotes). We also have an information video below, answering the common questions regarding IOL.

BRAIN

A decision-making tool to help you make a choice that feels right for you and your baby.

Benefits - What are the benefits of making this decision?
Risks - What are the risks associated with this decision?
Alternatives - Are there any alternatives?
Intuition - How do I feel? What does my 'gut' tell me?
Nothing - What if I decide to do nothing/wait and see? What happens next?

Your pregnancy, your choice.
