To help you to successfully bridge the theory-practice gap once you’ve qualified, we run a preceptorship programme for newly-qualified nurses, operating department practitioners and return-to-practice nurses.
To accelerate your growth clinically, you will be allocated your own preceptor to support you in practice.
Daisy pin
When you join us as a newly-qualified nurse, you’ll be presented with a commemorative daisy pin badge to welcome you to your new role and to thank you for choosing Northampton to begin your career
Our nurses wear their pin badges on their collars for their first six months in post.
They’re also a visual prompt for our other staff, patients and visitors that the nurse wearing the badge is new to practice. They’ll help us to remember how daunting a new job can be and how the little gestures can make a big difference.
Support from our practice development team
Our practice development team supports our newly-qualified workforce in a variety of ways, including:
- Delivering our preceptorship programme, utilising field specialists, bespoke clinical supervision sessions, individual ward-based assessments and action planning.
- Ensuring the validity of any training you undertake
- Authoring policies that drive our constantly-evolving healthcare environment.
- Representing nurse education across the hospital and with partner organisations ensuring that you have a voice in any policy or practice changes that are made.
- Carrying out quality assurance measures and audits to ensure the delivery of best practice care.
We ensure that our training is relevant and accessible to you. Our preceptorship training portfolio includes:

The programme takes place away from practice in the supportive environment of the classroom surrounded by your peers.
