Physiotherapy
A physiotherapist will assess and treat patients for changes in their physical abilities, including respiratory function (breathing), mobility (walking), transfers (standing up and sitting down) and balance.
Our physiotherapy team also provide an out of hours and weekend service for patients with respiratory problems.
Occupational therapy
An occupational therapist will assess and treat patients for changes in their ability to carry out daily activities including going to the toilet, washing themselves, getting dressed, making a hot drink or a meal.
Equipment
Some equipment may be issued if it is needed by the patients to help them return home safely. This may include walking frames, walking sticks, a hoist and slings, and various items to help them to stand up, e.g. a raised toilet seat and frame to push up on, or chair raisers.
Not all equipment can be provided and the therapist may give advice for the patients to buy certain items for themselves.
If patients have ongoing equipment needs after returning home, a referral may be made to the community occupational therapy service.
Students and work experience
We often have students working with us during their clinical placements as part of their university training. They are supervised throughout their placements by a physiotherapist or occupational therapist.
Currently we do not provide clinical work experience opportunities. However, there are opportunities to meet staff and the department through therapies days. Please contact the training and development centre on 01604 523315 for further information.
