Pulmonary Rehabilitation

 
 

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a twice weekly group exercise and education course designed to help people whose main symptom is breathlessness because of a long-term lung condition. The classes are usually held over 6 weeks, and you will also have a face to face assessment before the start and at the end. The classes are in community halls and leisure centres across the West Northamptonshire. We can offer i-Impact as home smart phone/ tablet app-based option.

The courses are run by respiratory specialist physiotherapists, nurses and qualified fitness instructors who are part of the Restart/ Chest clinic team. We aim to offer an assessment to start a class within 90 days of receiving a referral.

Pulmonary rehabilitation will:

  • Lessen the fear of breathlessness. 
  • Break the cycle of inactivity. 
  • Improve all round strength & endurance. 
  • Improve the ability to perform daily activities. 
  • To give you confidence to exercise safely. 
  • Improve understating of lung conditions to support better self-management and self-care.

Home exercises

Pulmonary Rehabilitation referrals at NGH are accepted for patients registered with GPs in West Northamptonshire. Referrals need to be made by your GP practice- we do not accept self-referrals.

Those living in North Northamptonshire will be offered Pulmonary Rehabilitation by our sister service at Kettering General Hospital again by GP referral.
