A University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) midwife has won Midwife of the Year at the first ever British Muslim Health Awards 2025.

Hauwa Hamza has trained and worked at Northampton General Hospital as a midwife and for the last sixteen months has worked in the One Digital and Data team in the role of Digital Clinical Facilitator to help transform and modernise midwifery information systems.

Hauwa travelled to Birmingham for the finals of the award – organised by The British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) – in December and was delighted when she was announced as a winner.

She said: “I was absolutely shocked. The other people nominated had done such good work I wasn’t expecting to win. When I did it was really nice and has help recognise the work we are doing around transformation.”

Hauwa’s job involves working between the clinical midwifery teams and the digital team to make sure technological changes – such as the new Electronic Patient Record at Northampton General Hospital – is working well and suitable for use with front-line staff.

She also contributes to the Royal College of Midwives’ Digital Midwife Network Forum and since 2014 has, with her sisters, supported home births in Nigeria by providing local families with thousands of birthing packs – including sterile scissors, clamps and towels – to enable them to have safe births at home.

Group Chief X Information Officer for UHN, Ramandeep Kaur, said: “Hauwa was honoured with this prestigious award recognising outstanding contribution to health and care.

“It is an accolade rooted in compassion, integrity, and service. Her recognition aligns powerfully with the aims of the British Muslim Health Awards, which celebrate individuals who uplift others through dedication, humility, and excellence, often without seeking recognition.

“Hauwa’s work reflects the values at the heart of these awards: a deep sense of duty, commitment to community, and a quiet leadership that creates lasting impact. In a sector shaped by relentless demand, her approach stands out for its humanity, professionalism, and unwavering care for those she serves. “

The British Muslim Health Awards were established to honour Muslim professionals whose contributions strengthen healthcare, build bridges across communities, and inspire future generations.

The Midwife of the Year Award recognises an individual who has demonstrated compassionate and meaningful impact through a values-led service.

President of BIMA, Dr Sahira Dar said: “The British Muslim Health Awards were established to honour the compassion, integrity and excellence of Muslim health and care professionals across the UK.

“The event was an inspiring celebration of service and leadership, highlighting the profound impact these individuals have on patients and communities. The depth of Muslim talent in healthcare is phenomenal, and it was humbling to see such excellence and honour their remarkable work.”

Ramandeep added: “Hauwa’s award is a testament not only to her personal achievements, but also to the wider culture of service and excellence she represents and her work at UHN.

Her recognition shines a well-deserved light on work that truly matters, and on a professional whose impact will continue to be felt far beyond the ceremony itself. Congratulations Hauwa.”
