A Northampton General Hospital nursing associate, a nurse, and a midwife have received DAISY Awards for the way their cared for their patients.

Nursing Associate Nicolette Williams, who works on Disney ward, was nominated by the mother of a four-day old baby for her prompt actions which led to life-saving care.

Parents, Hannah and Lee, wrote in their nomination: “From Paediatric A&E, we were transferred across to Disney ward where Nicolette truly saved our son’s life.

“If it wasn’t for the urgent action, care and attention of you Nicolette and Dr Labib who saved our son’s life, our lives would never be the same. You were exceptional and we owe everything to you. We were told that if we had waited two hours more from when we initially came in, Chester would not be here today.

“We count our lucky stars that you were on shift, that you were the nurse who observed Chester and how your dedication, knowledge and commitment to duty of care undoubtedly saved his life.

“Throughout our time in the hospital, your continued support and checking in, meant so much to us. We will forever be grateful and thankful for you and what you did for us, as not only parents but a family.”

Laura Gilson, a Staff Nurse on Dryden Ward, was nominated by a patient for the way she supported them during a really a difficult time waiting for a heart valve replacement at a specialist hospital.

Part of her nomination read: “Laura and the ward staff have fully encouraged me to gain weight and generally look after my health. When there are changes to my routine or setbacks, i.e. cancelled procedures or delays to my transfer due to infections, Laura would come and tell me personally in understandable terms and calms my reactions. Basically, my stay has seemed like weeks instead of months because of the care I receive from Laura and the ward.”

Midwife Kate Bowen from Robert Watson Ward was nominated by patient called Lucy who wrote in her nomination:

“After a long labour resulting in an emergency C-section my baby was taken to the neonatal unit where he was to remain for a few days. The next morning Kate came on duty and the difference she made to how I felt cannot be underestimated. She truly upheld the values of NGH with her kindness, compassion and professionalism.

“She encouraged me to shower and when I returned to my bed she had change the bedding, tidied up the area and reassured me that a single room would be available to me by that evening. Such simple gestures but they made such a difference to how I felt. Even when Kate was on the adjoining ward, she would pop in and check that we were ok. We will never forget her kindness. “

Director of Nursing Jo Smith said: “Nicolette, Laura and Kate have all shown outstanding compassionate care to their patients during some really challenging admissions to hospital.

“Nicolette supported Hannah and Chester to get swift and appropriate emergency care, Laura made a long and worrying stay in hospital bearable for her patient and Kate went the extra mile to support Lucy after an emergency c-section.

“They are all worthy winners of our DAISY Awards.”
