Play brings smiles, creativity and connection to our wards

PiHW2026 NGH Bluey and Peppa

Play in Healthcare Week is an annual event that celebrates the vital role play makes in the treatment and recovery of babies, children, and young people. Our play teams across Kettering General and Northampton General Hospital have been marking this week with visitors, activities and lots of laughter.

Throughout the week, the wards and Activity Centre were filled with colour, music, laughter and imagination. Face painting from Nicky’s Fancy Faces Parties, princess visits from Kelly’s Princess Parties Northamptonshire, appearances from much-loved cartoon characters Peppa and Bluey, and singing, dancing and glitter with Ever Enchanted Entertainment brought smiles to children, families and colleagues.

There were plenty of opportunities for children to join in and escape the routines of hospital life. Preacher The Storyteller shared Jack and the Beanstalk, while Tony from Smartie Artie Parties entertained patients with balloon modelling and a magic show. An interactive reading of The Amazing Fruitables, colourful crafts, sensory play and messy activities, including syringe painting, playdough and ceramic painting, gave patients the chance to create, explore and have fun.

Some of the week’s biggest reactions came from its larger-than-life visitors. Meatball and Dozer from Raptors World caused cheerful mischief around the wards, while Peppa and Bluey added even more excitement. The team’s annual party provided a fitting finale to a week packed with memorable moments.

Behind the fun was an important purpose. Play can help reduce anxiety, encourage communication and give children a sense of choice and normality during their hospital stay. Weekly music therapy from Friends of Thomas’s Fund also helps patients explore their feelings and relax. The laughter, creativity and connection seen across the week demonstrated how play can make hospital experiences more positive for patients and their families.

Thank you to every visitor, volunteer and colleague who supported the celebrations, and especially to our play teams for creating a week of joy, reassurance and lasting memories on the wards.
